Bellerive Fort or Kangaroo Bluff Battery is situated at the end of – you guessed it – Fort Street – via King St. near Bellerive Beach.

Not your traditional playground as it does not have any play equipment, facilities or BBQ’s, but it does have big guns (cannons) and a maze-like environment. I have visited with kids of all ages from toddlers to teenagers and it’s always a hit! Be careful as it has dangerous drops – young kids should be supervised but older kids will love climbing over cannons, ramparts and everything else they’re not supposed to.

The site is ideal for a picnic and has fantastic views down the River Derwent, Kunanyi and the western shore. You can also learn some interesting history – or not! Looks great at sunset and is ideal for viewing the Aurora Australis and yachts coming up the river (Sydney to Hobart for example).

This has always been one of my favourite sites to visit and I highly recommend it – everyone should visit it at least once.

Completed in 1884 the Kangaroo Fort Battery is a fortified structure originally equipped with cannons and artillery. It supported the existing Battery Point and other Batteries around Hobart. The perimeter was surrounded by a water-filled moat, cut glass wall tops and prickly hawthorn hedges. At each end of the moat is a caponier with rifle portholes for soldiers. A series of tunnels built into the fort provide storage for supplies and ammunition.
